Hammer and Chisel’s Strike Action Network is a network of students, teachers and other interested individuals committed to doing good together anywhere in the world.

Selected applicants participate in a series of leadership development workshops where they are introduced to basic and advanced leadership skills.

They develop these skills on self-selected projects that the network chooses to do. These projects may be short term events or long-term causes, but regardless of the specifics the network builds teams to achieve the stated purpose of the cause they have selected.

This Year’s CAUSES

Project 133

This year’s network is focusing on recycling food destined for disposal from restaurants into the kitchens of homeless shelters looking for food donations. Food is prepared, transported and delivered safely according to health requirements and then used by homeless shelters to provide nutritious meals for their constituents. The network team, called a Strike Team, works on the collection, packaging, transporting and delivery of these food items. The team works to identify partner restaurants and shelters, source drivers and vehicles for transport and coordinates pick-up and delivery schedules.

School Supplies

In the coming spring of 2018 the Strike Action Network will begin accepting donations and supplies to help support teachers in the greater Boston area. As families prepare for the new school year and receive teacher lists, you can help this cause by donating needed supplies or resources to help purchase those supplies. For many teachers in the Boston area, supplies are limited and it is not uncommon for teachers to use their own funds to provided needed supplies. Supplies like calculators, pens, pencils, snacks, files and folders are all needed. Sometimes, even larger or more expensive items are needed.

Clothing for the Homeless

The Strike Action Network will host a number of street stores where gently used clothing donations will be offered to homeless people in a unique fashion that enables choice and dignity. Following the model of the Street Store initiative out of South Africa, donations are collected and a street store date is set. After a period of advertising, the Strike Team focused on this cause and interested individuals host the store in the chosen location. People seeking clothing shop through the store selecting needed items. There is dignity in choice. Volunteers help shoppers like any retail clerk might, and then take the shopper to the checkout section where their items are bagged for transport. However, no money changes hands. This mechanism afforded through choice and having someone help, rather than handouts provides encouragement, connection, worth and dignity.
